Game Idea #4: Blast Moves

This week has been a little crazy between a big deadline at work and me moving. But I managed to squeeze in some time to flesh out Blast Moves!

High Concept:

The year is 2494. The human race is in a bitter struggle for survival, and you are their only hope. You pilot a new prototype spaceship, one that’s controlled not with your hands or your mind, but with your feet! Get off your butt and save humanity!

Platform:

Home Console

Why it needs to be made:

Let’s face it, there are healthier things to do than play videogames all day. And while the Dance Dance Revolution games are excellent, playing them isn’t the most… masculine activity. Blast Moves is the game that lets you blow stuff up and get a workout by “jumping around” (shhhh… don’t call it dancing or they’ll catch on…).

Description:

Blast Moves is a classic shoot-em-up game with a twist: you play the game with a dance-pad! Your spaceship is in the middle of the screen, and you shoot your lasers in eight different directions by tapping your foot on the pad. Shields and warping are triggered via different combinations of steps. Enemies are classic “shmup” fare, moving and firing in very simple, learn-able patterns, and when destroyed they give you different powerups that affect your firing patterns, movement abilities, and shields.

Why it will be fun:

The fun in DDR is undeniable, and Blast Moves would aim to build on it’s core mechanics of dancing, pattern recognition, and memorization. Shooting things and seeing them blow up is also fun. It would be really interesting to see how people react to the physicality of combining the two.

Final thoughts:

Thanks to my friends Nate and Jill for listening to me ramble about my “crazy weight-loss game for boys.” And special big thanks for the kicking idea for the title!

Oh my god, thanks for Patrick I have found my new personal slogan!!!

Get off your butt and save humanity!

I’m going to put it on shirts! It may be the name of my new band and/or album! When someone asks me a question to which I don’t know the answer, I will simply respond, “Get off your butt and save humanity!”

I love it!!! Oh, and our future sons are totally going cardio with Blast Moves, like my sister and I did on Powerpad back in the day.

This is great. Though, I imagine movement with a DDR pad might be frustrating. I remember trying out various PS2 games that recognized the DDR pad as DPad. I couldn’t find the game that didn’t give me hemorrhage. Of course, these games were meant to be played on a DDR pad.

If the movement was controlled by the game, the designers can have more control over spawning enemies (to make patterns) and the player might not be as frustrated.
