I got an email yesterday reminding me that GDC starts next week. Sadly, I won’t be attending. Stranglehold is requiring my full attention these days, and that means missing out on the fun of GDC. And while I’m bummed about not making it out to the convention, I’m mostly bummed about not being able to see Miyamoto talk live and in-person. Because he’s the man. But you already knew that.
GDC has become something of a ritual for me the last few years, and I’ve always left feeling smarter from what I learned and yet totally humbled by all the awesome folks I met. And I’ve been making games for just long enough to have friends spread out across the country that I’d love to see. But alas… with E3 “gone” I have a feeling GDC is going to blow up into some kind of crazy new beast… we’ll see if it keeps that secret club feeling it’s had.
But I will be at GDC in spirit. I just heard that Stranglehold is going to be shown at GDC in the Havok booth. (I swear this post didn’t start as a Stranglehold plug…) The Havok guys are swell and we make their software do awesome things. So they decided to show off the game even though most of us devs couldn’t be there. Thanks Havok!

I really wish I’d been able to make it, as well. I really got a lot out of GDC last year (my first!), and was hoping to continue that trend. I just couldn’t justify it financially this year. Hopefully next year!
DUDE.
First of all 50 percent of the people go to GDC to pitch ‘Ideas’ to publishers and PRAY they have a job the following month…you are working on a flagship title AND as a lead…
be happy you can’t go out and play with your friends because mommy says you have to ‘beat’ super mario bros first.

I will be going SUCKAS!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I should do a liveblog about it, to keep you kittens informed.
Yeah, thanks for rubbing it in, Chris. Say hi to Shiggy and the crew for all of us working stiffs. And while you’re at it, finish your XNA game. I need something new to play!
