Well this settles it. “XR” isn’t going to be the name of our industry.

Simple search phrase like...
“virtual reality” OR vr OR “augmented reality” OR ar OR “mixed reality” OR “spatial computing” OR xr

I’ve come full circle on this topic. We 100% should not be trying to teach the public a new phrase. “VR/AR” is the winner. “VR” has been a common phrase not just in high-tech but pop culture since the 1990s.

And while out of context “AR” can mean many different things, when paired next to “VR”, it only means “Augmented Reality”. And the positioning of the two side-by-side help explain the continuum.

When we try to give the VR/AR continuum new names we the run the risk of confusing the public, splitting hairs, or having a giant corporation co-opt the name as a trademark, brand, or product line.

So I’m not going to try to work “XR”, “mixed reality”, or “spatial computing” into my lexicon. I’ve just taught my parents what the hell it is I do, and I’m not starting over anytime soon.
