@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Ask your friends, colleagues, and contacts. Ask the people who they introduce you to your question, and ask “who else should I talk with about this?” Then it’s about fairly standard professional networking — being professional, patient, and politely persistent.

Send them an update every now and then when cool and important stuff happens in your life and career. Don’t imagine or expect them to be on all the same social networks as you, so tell ‘em.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice And while I think most mentorship happens and grows organically — you can absolutely reach out to people you respect in the industry directly. A well-written email or LinkedIn invitation can do wonders and open doors. But don’t go in guns blazing.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Tell them you which of their works you love and why. Tell them how their work is influencing your work. Ask interesting questions about their career and projects, and relate it back to the personal or professional projects you’re working on.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Remember that even the largest icons in an industry are still just normal people. Respect their time and emotional bandwidth. Don’t ask them to solve all of your problems at once. Start small and build from there.
