@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Mentorship is a relationship, a friendship built on common interests in an industry or discipline, built through conversations, curiosity, and advise. And like any friendship, mentorship a often grow organically and unexpectedly.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice A great way to start is with a single question, or a single problem you’re trying to solve. Put the question out in public (like you just did) and see who replies. Ask the people you trust most “hey who do you know who can answer this question for me?”

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Ask your friends, colleagues, and contacts. Ask the people who they introduce you to your question, and ask “who else should I talk with about this?” Then it’s about fairly standard professional networking — being professional, patient, and politely persistent.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Take note of the people who show up and answer your questions, who you like and click with, who don’t give off creep vibes, and who don’t immediately ask for something in return. Stay in touch with them, and ask them first next time.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice As your professional network grows, keep in touch with the smart, cool, reliable people. Send them an update every now and then when cool and important stuff happens in your life and career. Don’t imagine or expect them to be on all the same social networks as you, so tell ‘em.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice And while I think most mentorship happens and grows organically — you can absolutely reach out to people you respect in the industry directly. A well-written email or LinkedIn invitation can do wonders and open doors. But don’t go in guns blazing.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Tell them you which of their works you love and why. Tell them how their work is influencing your work. Ask interesting questions about their career and projects, and relate it back to the personal or professional projects you’re working on.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice Remember that even the largest icons in an industry are still just normal people. Respect their time and emotional bandwidth. Don’t ask them to solve all of your problems at once. Start small and build from there.

@MakdadSarah @GeekyFriedRice And as you are learning from others in the industry, try to share and pass on what you learn. We’re all still figuring it out, and no one knows everything! (Sorry for the long answer, but it’s a topic I care a bunch about!)
